Was wondering what kinds of TGP wattage should be fed to something like an RTX 5060/5070 in a laptop for decent performance in gaming (i.e. smooth performance on high, not ultra settings)?
For context, I’m sort of eyeing the Thinkpad T1g Gen 8, which has a bunch of really nice features and I appreciate the Thinkpad brand (just too expensive), but its spec sheet says 60w (75w boosted) TGP for its dGPU. Is that way too little?
5070 at 75W can do decently well on high settings– 60+ FPS in most games on Ultra even. 80+ in Forza. It’s not full wattage of course, which would be 115 like in the Legion 7i. These specs in the T1g line up pretty closely with the Omen Transcend actually which is a very premium feeling laptop, might be a good alternative to the ThinkPad if you’re looking to spend way less. Doesn’t have a haptic touchpad though, which might be a dealbreaker for you.
If you decide on the ThinkPad after all, I think you’ll get the gaming performance you’re hoping for out of it at high settings. Lenovo does well with performance consistency. It’s bigger than the Transcend too so it should have better thermals. If you decide to go for it, please use this link. Thanks!
Appreciate the reply! Yeah I’m unfortunately a little beholden to Lenovo because they haven’t done me wrong. Maybe Black Friday can help out on the costs, otherwise Yoga Pro 9i Aura as another option?
Do you think there is any value in the LPCAMM2 memory provided in the Thinkpad in terms of longevity of the device? Not too familiar with this form of RAM.
I know Josh would probably vote for the Legion 7i over the Yoga Pro by just a hair. Both are on decent sales right now though, much cheaper than the ThinkPad.
LPCAMM2 is supposed to be better for laptops due to its memory density and efficiency, but it’s a standard that hasn’t been adopted by the industry at large yet. So I’d say it’s not going to make a huge difference in the shorter term if I had to guess, but who knows about further out.
Gotcha. One final question I have is what kinds of considerations should I make regarding processers for Arrowlake? Mainly, what might be the benefits of an Ultra 9 285H vs. the Ultra 7 265/255H and vice versa.
If I’m being honest, for most games (apart from maybe extremely CPU heavy games like Baldur’s Gate 3), the change from a Core Ultra 7 H to Core Ultra 9 H won’t be as noticeable. The H to HX would be.
