I’m looking for recommendation on a new laptop and wanted to give you some context on how I’ll be using it.
I’m an accountant who has recently started my own practice, and my laptop will be my primary work device. My day-to-day use includes:
Cloud-based accounting and tax software (Xero, Quickbooks, etc)
Heavy browser use with multiple tabs open at once
Frequent Zoom and Microsoft Teams calls (webcam, microphone, and audio quality are important)
Content creation alongside my accounting work, including:
Recording and editing video (YouTube long-form and short-form clips)
Creating social media content
Screen recording and presentations
Portability matters the least as I’ll be working between home and occasionally on the go, but reliability, performance, and longevity are more important than ultra-thin or “consumer” features.
I’m looking for something that:
Can comfortably handle multitasking and moderate video editing
Has a strong webcam, microphone, and speakers
Will remain performant for several years
Runs Windows
I don’t have a strict budget and would prefer the right machine rather than the cheapest option.
Based on this, I’d really value your recommendation (or a short list of options) and why you think they’d suit my use case.
This is my first choice based on all the qualities you need. You can also wait for the new 2026 which would include Panther Lake and will be released in the upcoming months.
I did short-list the Yoga Pro 9i together with its little brother the 7i 2 in 1 as well as the thinkpad x9. I concede that the x9 perhaps wouldn’t have been ideal for content creation.
Out of curiosity, do you think the 2025 Yoga Pro 9i is more than enough for the next few years or is the Panther Lake in the 2026 refresh likely to be a meaningful jump for this kind of mixed business and creator workload? I’m not in a rush but I also don’t want to over-wait for marginal gains.
Panther Lake iGPU and performance per watt are the highlights. In terms of raw performance, I think last gen will still have plenty of CPU power for what you need. For content creation, the Nvidia GPUs are the same. You may see an improvement in battery life with the newer Panther Lake models, but it seems like portability (and maybe battery life) are not so important to you?
Also on the microphone and webcam front, I think having a decent one built in for Zoom calls is important, but if you are setting up at your desk, a dedicated USB webcam and headset for a few hundred bucks goes a long way, especially if you are planning on using then to make YT content as well.
