Which laptop should I get for college use?

I’m looking for a laptop that can last long enough for college while also having solid performance, ideally if it can switch from iGPU mode to dGPU mode or something like that to help with battery life, I’m not playing any AAA games but I just want to utilise a high refresh rate screen for a smoother experience as long as 1% lows aren’t below 30fps and average fps is above 60

Here are the ideal specs of the laptop:

CPU : Zen 5 Ryzen 5/7, Arrow Lake H (Lunar Lake is acceptable if that’s the case of needing good battery life)

RAM : Ideally 32GB but 16GB is fine for the time being as long as there’s upgradeable RAM

GPU : RTX 5060 if possible but 5050 is fine as well

Storage : Ideally 1TB but 512GB is acceptable as long as there’s upgradeable ssd slots

Screen : Not asking for a high resolution screen(1920 x 1200 is enough for me) but 120hz refresh rate or higher is my requirement for the screen

Ports : 2/3x Type-A, 2x Type-C(not using anything with Thunderbolt so it’s optional), HDMI, Audio Jack

Budget : $2000/RM8500(I live in Malaysia)

So far after watching Josh’s reviews I’m considering either the TUF A14/A16 or Aero X16 but feel free to recommend anything else that would suit my requirements

well if you’ve watched all of Josh’s reviews, then you might’ve noticed that one of his favourite laptops is the Lenovo Legion 7:

and would you look at that, on Lenovo Malaysia’s site the 5060 Legion 7 is right under your budget (and on other online sites like Shopee, you might be able to get the RTX 5070 one under budget too)

The battery life after continuous video playback is around 7 hours tho, a bit low for my standards considering I like to finish my work in school but thanks for letting me know, I also stumbled upon the IdeaPad Pro 5i so there are many more options now, but the reason why I never considered a Lenovo laptop in the first place is slightly worse battery life than others while at the same time giving performance that I don’t need

The IdeadPad Pro 5i is great for your use case but I think it only comes with 16gb of soldered ram so not great for future proofing.

….I’ve already checked, the IdeaPad Pro 5 in Malaysia (just like in Indonesia) doesn’t have the RTX 5050.

But while we’re on the topic of battery efficient dGPU laptops, [I found this deal for the HP Omen Transcend 14 on Shopee](https://shopee.com.my/HP-OMEN-14-FB1032TX-(Ultra-7-255H-32GB-RAM-1TB-SSD-RTX5060-8GB-3K-OLED-120Hz-W11-WHITE-H-S-2024-365-Basic-2-YR-i.295089065.40078682837):

It’s got an OLED unlike the TUF or Aero!

Tho if you’re willing to wait 3 weeks, and can save up at least 300 ringgits in the meantime, you can get the brand new Gen 11 Lenovo Yoga 7i Pro on day 1:

As shown in the 2026 LOQ review; even Lenovo can make 60Wh last really long using Intel Panther Lake; and since the Yoga 7 Pro has an even bigger battery than the LOQ (84Wh), the Yoga is guaranteed to last even longer!

And not to mention the Yoga comes with a pen for note taking in college!

Thanks man, I’m just worried about the keyboard being warmer than most for the Omen Transcend 14 and the Yoga Pro 7 is definitely one that I haven’t checked yet, anyhow I’ll wait for the review to come out before making any decisions, most likely I’m gonna buy a laptop at around July or August so probably by then some 2026 models should be launched

Ah I see, thanks for the info I missed out on

Do you prefer a gaming laptop with a dgpu or are you okay with a igpu if it performs decent ( compatible to a low wattage rtx 5050 )?

Get the X9 panther lake chip- the igpu is good enough for normal games in 1200p, even AAA titles can be played in 1200p with decent fps. Another positive thing about using this chip is that you would have a better battery life compared to any kind of gaming laptop.

From the laptops you mentioned the new asus TUF is a very good choice.

Although according to josh’s videos insee AMD chips don’t perform as well compared to the intel HX chips. Moreover you’ll face some driver issues with the AMD chips.

I checked and found that the Strix Halo version of the TUF is coming to Malaysia and it performs like an underwatted 4060 right? If so I’ll wait for the review and see if its performance is good enough for me, thanks for mentioning

it’s equivalent to a full-powered RTX 4060/5050 actually

Ah my bad, I think it’s good enough for me, I always keep my settings at low for every game that I play anyway

Good news guys, the 2026 TUF A14 released in Malaysia so if I’m able to get a 2025 one for less that would be such a good deal. Plus Hari Raya sales are also starting so do you think that I should buy one now or wait till I get my results at 31 March for my finals, my mom thought that getting me a laptop afterwards is more rewarding but I’m afraid that there won’t be much stock left and the sales might end, what do you think

Whoa, how much does the 2026 TUF A14 costs in Malaysia?

RM7599, around $1900 to $2000 for the 32GB ram, 1TB version, I found out through lowyat.net, one of the most popular tech malls in Malaysia

Wait, didn’t last year’s TUF A14 cost RM7499? That’d be only a RM100/25 USD increase from the RTX 5060 version last year

So I guess Asus is expecting to price the Strix Halo TUF A14 basically the same as the 2025 RTX 5060 version

Damn you guys in Malaysia got cooked tho, in Indonesia the RTX 5060 TUF A14 (with 32GB RAM) only costs ~26.5 million Rupiah or 6149RM (1559 USD)

Are those current prices, if so that’s a steal for the 2025 model, but it doesn’t seem like it’s too unreasonable thanks to all the shortages and wars ongoing

Yes they’re current prices, I just checked Asus Malaysia’s official store on Shopee

My parents are most likely gonna get the laptop at a tech mall like Plaza Low Yat so despite Shopee being cheaper I don’t see a world where they’ll buy from there, bit of a shame

That is, if the store doesn’t tell your parents to buy the laptop from their own online storefront

(It literally happened to my mom when she was buying a new phone on a mall, the store told her to purchase the phone on their online store)
