Should I get Thinkpad T1g or P1, Gen 8 vs Gen 7

Hello,

I am an College student looking at a new device, I was originally looking at the Asus Proart P16 but due to some concerns I avoided it. I found the Thinkpad T1g or P1 which has what I was looking for, 16 inch display, keyboard without numpad, decent battery life and a good display. Currently there are many options within the lenovo website which confused me on what to get.

Here are the following considerations:

Lenovo ThinkPad T1g Gen 8: 5070 and 3k screen

Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 8: NVIDIA RTX PRO™ 2000 Blackwell and 1920 x 1200

Lenovo ThinkPad P1 Gen 7: NVIDIA RTX PRO™ 2000 Blackwell and 2560 x 1600

Theses are the options I looked at,

My uses cases are standard studying and doing assignments
I also plan to do some light gaming, simple games

Please let me know what would be the purchase to make and if there any devices I should look at let me know

I also want to ask, if any of you own this device how bad is the fan noise, does it make noise while running simple tasks like browser and Excel sheets, or starts when doing GPU intensive tasks

damn bruh, you’re a college student with a 2000$ budget?!

The issue is that the T1g and P1 G8 have really suspect screens thats only 60Hz (which will make even scrolling feel choppy), while the P1 Gen 7 only has an RTX 2000 Ada which is only as good as an RTX 4050

if you really got a $2000 budget for a Thinkpad, I highly suggest upgrading the P1 Gen 8 into the Tandem OLED option, it will be a night & day difference

(tho personally, if I were you i’d just go get the Zephyrus G16)

I was interesting in the G16, but chose to avoid due to concerns on reddit, and also due to wanting a machine that looked more professional and not gamer. If there are any options that are cheaper I might consider as two grand is still a lot of money to spend.

what were the concerns exactly?

I’ve seen many people complain out the LM, or out software issues, but mainly another reason I’m leaning toward the Thinkpad is it had a right ctrl button which I use often

You could consider this one

Interesting, what is the difference between this and the Thinkpad, currently the price on theses are similar, I personally didn’t consider it as it had numberpad keyboard

This is more of a creator focused laptop.
