Deciding between two laptops for uni

Hi! I’m currently looking for a laptop for university as an engineer and a light gamer. I’ve been looking for a while and the two laptops I liked the most are the Asus Zephyrus G16/G14 and the Gigabyte Aero X16. I know lenovo laptops are always reliable, but as a uni student I really value good battery life and portability. The ones I’m looking for are the 5070 versions btw I cant afford anything more. I’m currently having second thoughts going for a G14/G16 due to the price difference between them and the Aero X16. If you could please help me decide whether is worth going an Asus or not or look at laptops other than these two. ((I’m not living in the US and this laptop will be with me until I graduate, so QC is also important for me)). Really appreciate the help.

Also thanks for everyone on team for making this community and answering everyone .

I think that in terms of QC and build quality the Zephyrus has an edge, however the Aero is a decent enough alternative for you to consider, especially since it can be found for a cheaper price.

Hey,

As a university student you want something portable, battery life should be at least 8 hrs, and the most crucial requirement… good consumer support in case you face issues.

The G16 is the best among your choices, as it has great hardware, good cooling solution and a good battery life compared to its peers.

The G14 is a bad choice as it fits all the G16 components in a much smaller frame, which leads to not so great cooling solution and hence overheating.

The Aero X16 is a Zephyrus G16 alternative that doesn’t vapourise your wallet. But I have no idea how reliable it would be so check this aspect before you think of buying this.

In your country, does Lenovo laptops (yoga, IdeaPad, ThinkPad) have dedicated gpus?

I really liked the Lenovo IdeaPad pro 5. In Josh’s new video, the battery life bar graph showed the IdeaPad pro 5 with around 12 hrs of office work. check out josh’s video.

I would really suggest to look into other options, among so many different varieties of laptops you would definitely find your perfect match. Research a bit more. Lenovos are reliable, and some have good batteries as well.

Thank you so much! I’ll look into it for sure.

Just a quick question :otter:. I’ve seen many videos that say that the G16 doesn’t have the best battery life when compared with the G14 that comes with the AMD CPUs. How big is the difference between the two, some videos say the G16 only gives around 4-5 hours.

To be honest I have literally no clue.

Different people run their Zephyrus G16 in different modes. Hence you get different numbers as battery life.

Josh’s battery tests are done in 200 NITS of brightness ( 30-40% of the brightness bar), Netflix video playback and office work. According to his graphs the G16 can give around 6-8 hrs of battery life on different use cases.

If we compare this to the market, the laptop that comes close to this level of battery lifeis the HP OMEN transcend. Although it has a underfed gpu, etc. look up the web and watch reviews and read posts of credible people in the community for more information.

Alright thank you soo much!!

The one add ill make is that the TUF A14 isn’t talked about much but it is a bit of a hidden gem. Its not built as well as the G14 but we found it felt far cooler to the touch and I believe it had good battery life (check our review of it though)
