Im looking for a Portable Laptop with good batterylife and somewhat powerfull, dont need a dGPU but with great graphics and minimum 32gb ram. Im ok paying a premium price. Was looking a the x7 or x9 with Intel B390. I can sacrifice a bit on performance to get some more portability.
I wouldn’t actually recommend sacrificing on power to get more portability with this particular X7 358H chip because you have to pay a premium to get it with 32GB of RAM, and doing so means that it’ll underperform its peers w/ the 358H by 15-20% or so in multi-core performance which was a bit too much for me personally.
I was originally thinking similarly to you w/ the Framework 13 Pro until I saw Cierra’s review of the machine. Suffice to say, a one fan cooling solution
for this chip is inadequate. This coupled with uncomfortably high keyboard temperatures gave me a much needed reality check because 45-50c is where my dying laptop is idling right now, and it’s really not a good typing experience.
My main criteria for an X7 358H laptop was as an excellent coding / schoolwork / self-study laptop that runs cool at all times, has good linux compatibility and stays cool to the touch. Pretty much every X7 358H laptop that wasn’t this thinkpad variant really didn’t give enough heed to cooling it; you can see that with the Omnibook Ultra 14 (x9 388H) which performed worse than a well cooled X9-15p.
The only laptop that I really considered was the Swift 16 AI which is significantly cheaper, but larger and that has ‘dreadful palm rejection’ issues. If you want you can consider the X5 338H with the B370 (most likely just a binned down 358H) or look for laptops w/ that specific SOC, but they seem extremely rare right now.
The XPS doesn’t feed their chips enough power (they prioritize battery life at the expense of performance) and seem to have systematic shutdown issues resulting in Dell / Microcenter wanting to get rid of available stock, lol. The thinkpad is the most balanced B390 by far unless you want to start looking at the super expensive Asus / Samsung laptops which aren’t really well reveiewed because they’re $3000+
