I’m currently in Malaysia doing a CS degree. I sold my gaming PC for an HP Victus 16 and kinda regret it, that thing is too heavy, battery is meh, and commuting 5 days/week with it is torture. I want a new laptop that’ll last me at least 4+ years (through an MSc likely AI/ML or DevOps). My uni has had 1–2 Windows-only modules, but I’m keeping the Victus for those and for games, and during my MSc I plan on building a gaming pc again. My initial pick was the MacBook Air M3 (16GB/512GB) around RM4,250 (~US$1,009), and I’m also eyeing the M4 Air (16/512) ~RM4,919(~US$1,200) EDU as the “buy once for years” option. I care most about future-proofing, long battery life, light weight, good resale and of course no limitation in doing my works. I was also considering getting a “Zenbook” or a “G14”. I can’t decide because at the MacBook Air price, I can get Windows ultrabooks with OLED screens, higher refresh rates (120–144Hz), and often larger SSDs (e.g., 1TB) aren’t those better for long-term value/future-proofing, or does the Air’s battery/weight/resale still make more sense given my future plan. I just don’t want to make another decision I’ll regret. Thank you Josh for this amazing community!
was my post too long?
If u can get by macos, and the apps/tools that u use are supported my macs, macs are undoubtedly the best machines for portability, battery life, overall laptop experience. would recommend getting the m4 mac as m4 is significantly better than the m3, one thing to consider is that the airs come with a 60hz panel that can be irritating if ur used to higher refresh rates
We have had 1-2 modules where they use windows only tools but that’s fine. I just can’t accept 60hz for this price range haha. I wonder when they will start doing 120hz for their base models like they do with iphones now.
