I want to get my son a new laptop for his first year of college (Computer Science major). It is not for gaming, only college stuff, he already has a gaming desktop. I want it light and with a good battery, and preferably of $1000 or less, and not a Mac. And with at least 15" screen, 16GB of RAM, 500GB of SSD and 3 USB ports. I found some good options from Lenovo and Dell. My only indecision: 1) should I get one with an Intel Core Ultra (good battery usage) or something better; 2) is Ethernet worth it or not.

Do you have a budget you’re working with?

1. Core Ultra Series 3 (H chip) is a really good idea if you want good CPU performance and battery life. I can’t think of much better than that.
2. Ethernet is likely to make it a much bulkier laptop, if you can even find it. I don’t think it’s very common, so it’s not really worth the trade off.

Thanks for the advice! I would prefer $1000 or less. On #1 I agree. On #2 I think you are right. 🙂

A Core Ultra Series 7 is better and still good for battery, right?

It depends, Core Ultra is a surname for a whole line of CPUs. Look up its specific name, it should be three numbers followed by a letter. An optional X **before** the numbers indicates better graphics (more on this lower down).

- If it starts with a 3 it’s from the 2026 generation, which is both powerful and efficient; or if it ends in V (should start with a 2) it’s from the 2025 gen efficient ones: similar battery life as the 2026 gen but noticeably slower (still plenty good for most people, I suggest looking up benchmarks as cooling also influences this).
  - If it starts with an X too (only on 2026 models), it will have better graphics which can help for design, games and in a more limited way with light AI if he needs to run it on the laptop itself.
    - Do note that 2026 processors without the X will have worse graphics than the 2025 models (which start with a 2 instead of a 3) **except for the Ultra 5 338H** which slots between the two generations. Why? Because they can.

If it starts with a 2 but instead of a V it ends in:

- H: similar, if a little lower, performance to the 2026 ones but will be a tad more power consuming. I have one of these and it’s still good for battery life
- HX: Very high performance, but you might see your battery life meter go down in real time. Avoid for this (also to cool this it’s only in thicker designs).

As for an AMD CPU, the AI 9 is a lot more powerful than the 7 for some reason, they have similar graphics to Intel’s 2xxH series of CPUs but their WIFi partnership with Mediatek means you won’t be able to have the same stability Intel offers (still plenty useable but might frustrate you on a bad day).

You mentionned Ethernet, it’s a good thing to have but is being phased pretty quick, being only left in thicker laptops, usually gaming ones. If you get an Intel-based laptop you will have an Intel WiFi chip which are already very good by themselves, an AMD less so but still good. 99% of laptops let you swap out the chip anyways if you’re handy with a screwdriver and it doesn’t mess with the warranty.

Do note that RAM is soldered on a lot of these devices so if you find a model you like and the 32GB model is within budget you may as well go for it, especially if it’s a 2026 CPU: with those integrated graphics the RAM actually becomes graphics memory too, so once again if he ever needs to run some light AI model it will use that. A dedicated GPU will still be better, they’re only supplied by NVIDIA these days so easy to recognise.

3 USB ports is rare on slim laptops unless you count Type-C too.

Try looking for the Ideapad Pro 5, it can be had with a GPU and is decently built and speccable though only in your budget if on sale (is he eligible for student discounts?).

The Zenbook 14 line can be a better build quality option but without the GPU option, often on discounts. Yes it’s 14 inches so maybe look at it in a store first.

Also look for HP Omnibooks, though they may skimp out on the screen (a big screen can only fit so much information on it if it’s the same resolution as a small one).

This currently in your budget on sale, with decent battery life, but you will lose out on some performance from the latest gen of Series 3 processors. This may not matter if he has a desktop at home. This is from the Series 2 V processors mentioned above.

Is it better to have an Intel Core Ultra 5, or Intel Core Ultra 7 for balanced power and performance ?

My order of preference would be (from least to most desirable):

Ultra 5 2-series

Ultra 7 3-series

Ultra 7 2-series

Ultra 5 338H

Ultra X7 3 series.

Thanks. Good to know! I got him a Dell laptop with an Intel Core Ultra 7 255U. I believe is Series 2, formerly called Arrow Lake. Its a nice laptop but I am not impressed with its battery life…

There’s no way to put it lightly, I kind of forwent the U-series from Intel in part because it’s their low-power, maximum efficiency lineup and in part because I forgot it existed.

Even though it’s their low power line it should be respectable enough as far as performance is concerned, you mentionned CS studies so it might end up being a limiting factor.

In fact the V series (with the 255U’s counterpart being called 258V for no reason whatsoever) is supposedly a mid-term substitute to it, offering fewer but more individually powerful cores for both better (better but nowhere near H-series) performance, battery life and graphics.

If now you’re telling me it’s bad at battery life, the one thing it’s supposedly good at, I would strongly recommend checking whether you’re still within the return window. In a lot of countries it’s 14 days.

Thanks for all your advice! Well, I have some of the Win11 power saving options On, but not all. But yes, I am only getting 4 hrs of battery life. Funny that you suggested a return because I was thinking the same thing (I have 5 more days), but I am not sure…

Yeah, four hours is brutal. Unless you have dedicated graphics that are stuck on that really shouldn’t happen (as someone with an Ultra 7 255H, the power-hungry version of your chip, I get twice that).

If you’re quick, Best Buy US currently has the Acer Swift 16 _AI_ for 999USD, just at your budget. One of the best CPUs on the market, tremendous screen (3K OLED) and just generally well-reviewed by these people.

If you’re not in the US I’m sorry, I assumed you were because of your $ budget.

I mean, it’s not bad, just not great value for money. As long as it can keep up with its purpose and he’s happy, all is well.

And you can probably tweak with the settings to eek out some more battery life.
