Hi, I am currently a civil engineer, and I am a research assistant in the university I study my masters at too. So I basically need the ability to unplug my device and take it with me on the go to the site or my Uni office [Portability].
I am currently mainly depending on my first love, my 7 year old setup that i built by myself rocking the i5-7600K, 16GB RAM, and the GTX 1060 3GB. I have purchased in 2022 a laptop that i havent used alot since then which is the Asus rog strix g512LV, it has the i7-10750H , 16GB RAM and the rtx 2060 6GB.
Now I am planning to move everything I have from the PC to the Laptop, Tho I am still concerned about somethings:
- Stability & Durability: everyone knows a desktop PC is much more stable and have a longer life than a laptop, a big minus is that the laptop I have is the first gen of asus laptops that is using liquid metal instead of thermal paste making me more concerned. To extend the laptop life as much as possible I can change the battery every now and then by myself.
- Battery life: I am forced to always carry a brick as this laptop is shit in terms of battery, I will have one at home and another [After market one] in my backpack. The concerning point is : The after market one if it was of worse quality it could fry my laptop i heard! This is the exact one i am planning to buy as it shows the exact same part number as the OEM charger I have https://www.amazon.ae/gp/product/B0CY52CST4/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3CEGCYV4M76FF&th=1 [Not affiliate, genuinly need advicing]
- Thermals & Sound: I am using a liquid AIO cooler in my pc, it is quite and stable in terms of temps, I tried to play the same game on both devices [Tomb Raider series], and my laptop was stuttering hard eventhough it has better components! I am planning to use Illano V12 Ultra & G-Helper to mitigate heat and extend the laptop life as much as possible.
- There is 1 piece of info I am never able to find anywhere , the laptop has 2 ports at the back of it , one is hdmi 2.0 and one is type c that supports dp 1.4 i think , which one connects to dgpu and which one connects to igpu? What is the difference , which one is better ? Can I use both at the same time for multiple monitor setup?
Now my plan is to set up power plans in my laptop after fully formatting it and deblouting it.
- On battery I limit the CPU power to 50% , not sure if I can do the same to GPU tho.
- At home [Meaning plugged into power and cooled with the help of illano V12] I intend to allow it to boost and have max performance.
- If connected to Wall plug and not at home i am planning to limit cpu to 99% [I heared this prevents the extra boost thing so I can have lower temps].
- All the time G-Helper will be used to limit cpu temps to a max of 85% [Except for at home].
I sadly dont have enough money to buy a new laptop now
thus it isn’t an option. I am planning to get the asus rog zephyrus g16 5070ti at somepoint tho but it wont be soon ever. I wanted to know:
Am I on the right track? Is there anything I am missing? Are my precautions correct and may extend the laptop life well beyond 5 years from now?
Any advice will be much appreciated!
Sorry this was too long, and Thanks
